Software midi solutions:
Check Timidity, a software-wavetable midi player. There are several versions for a wide range of OperatingSystems (Win 95/NT, LINUX, MacOs, HP-UX,...).
The Win95 version requires at least a 586 CPU for realtime output.

DOS users should have a look at the cubic player. It plays mod-files basically, but with the gus-patchset it can be used for midi files too. It runs well on 486 machines.
Another choice is the YAMAHA Soft Synthesizer. It works as a device that emulates a XG wavetable card with a little delay and a moderate amount of CPU power.. Can be used within every win-application as MIDI output.
A good choice to play midi-files within your favourite player or sequenzing software.
